Nickolas Ashford 1941-2011

If I say the words “Ashford and Simpson” to you – if you’re of a certain age – you’ll probably start humming the 1984 hit “Solid”. Or more likely stare blankly at me. But what if I said “Aint No Mountain High Enough”? Doubtless you’ll be able to recite it word for word complete with prerequisite whoops wearing a Diana Ross wig for good measure. Same with “I’m Every Woman”. Husband and wife team Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson wrote both of these plus many more. Their body of work was substantial, they had few peers and were inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 2002. Their songs are entrenched in the very heart of popular music culture yet relatively few people know who they are.

I know my Podcast musical choices were often derided, but Ashford and Simpson were very much part of my musical youth. Along with the likes of Chaka Khan adding to the soundtrack, a young Migs was often seen trying (and occasionally succeeding!!) to talk young ladies in Silvers at Park Hall into throwing a few steps around the sunken dance floor.

Grossly under-appreciated and a sad loss..

This really shocked me last week and sadly it didn't get the coverage it deserved in the press (no change there then)

I saw Ashford and Simpson live in 2007 and it was one of the best show's I've ever witnessed. The talent of this pair was immense and time will reflect on the career of Nick Ashford with favour.

A legend in every sense of the word, rest in peace Nick.
